Since its release in 2012, Apple consumers have become accustomed to seeing the Lightning connector. Now it is time to say goodbye to the Apple Lightning cable Connector. But hold on to your Lightning cables, because the transition is not happening overnight.

The Last Holdouts: Apple Products Still Using Lightning
Since its 2015 release, the stand-alone Magic Keyboard has remained largely the same, but it now comes in four different iterations. The keyboard is small and chiclet-style. With prices ranging from $99 to $199, they are somewhat pricey.
Introduced concurrently with the 2021 M1 iMac, the two newest models feature Touch ID (one with a numpad and the other without), while the other two are devoid of a fingerprint sensor. Importantly, though, each one has a Lightning port on the back for charging. If Apple releases an M3-powered iMac this year, that might soon change. Let’s see.
With the release of the Magic Keyboard in 2015, the $99 Magic Mouse transitioned from removable batteries to a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Apple notoriously made the confusing decision to place the Lightning connector on its belly, and that decision has remained the same to this day, leaving users to wait for it to charge or use an alternate mouse while they flip it over like a defenseless turtle.
It’s probable that the Magic Mouse may soon get a facelift that includes USB-C, just like the Magic Keyboard. Hopefully, Apple will relocate the port at some point.
About eight years ago, the Magic Trackpad was also modified to provide a huge trackpad with a glass top for users of Mac and iPad. It makes use of multitouch gestures, sensors rather than a physical button for clicking, and is an all-around amazing trackpad.
At $149 on Apple’s website, it’s also not inexpensive. Fortunately, its Lightning port is on the back, unlike the Magic Mouse; but, like with the Magic Mouse, a new iMac would be the ideal occasion to switch that out for a USB-C port.
With enhanced wireless connectivity, voice activation capabilities for Siri, and wireless charging (for an additional $40), Apple’s second attempt at the entry-level AirPods provided a good user experience.
Additionally, they had a Lightning port from the beginning and still do. Apple introduced USB-C to the AirPods Pro last week, but it’s unclear if the long-awaited 2019 AirPods will receive the same treatment given that a new generation of earbuds has already surpassed them.
Apple appears to have recognized the difficulty of getting headphones to fit comfortably in everyone’s ears by releasing a third wireless earbud form factor in 2021. Not only do the third-generation AirPods not fit into your ear canals, but they also have some of the better characteristics of the AirPods Pro.
You can nearly always find offers on them, although their pricing is between the other two versions at $169 and $179, depending on whether you want MagSafe or not. Two major improvements to the AirPods Pro are noise cancellation and a USB-C connection.
It’s acceptable that the ostentatious and costly AirPods Max headphones require a Lightning port for charging, but it annoys me that they also need one for connected audio. Although I have found that many Macs don’t have very dependable Bluetooth, Apple’s high-end speakers sound excellent.
They’re reportedly moving to USB-C next year; ideally, this means some major upgrades (like a 3.5mm audio jack), since they could really use it at this point—the $549 price tag isn’t helping them much these days.
Though the original Apple Pencil had a Lightning connector protruding from its head like a silly hat, there’s something incredibly endearing about that design choice. Since the 10th generation iPad does not support the second-generation Apple Pencil, you may still purchase the original Apple Pencil from the Apple Store.
In fact, Apple is obligated to continue selling it. Thus, it is unlikely that this one will receive a USB-C update; instead, it is expected to remain in use until Apple releases the Pencil with integrated wireless capabilities.
The $429 iPhone SE, which is Apple’s most affordable smartphone, is a good offer. The iPhone SE is still the only genuinely compact phone in the company’s lineup because the iPhone 13 Mini was finally, sadly, retired yesterday.
Along with other nostalgic Apple features like Touch ID, a single 12MP rear camera, non-MagSafe wireless charging, and an LCD screen, it still uses Lightning. However, its A15 Bionic chip is strong and only lacks one GPU core compared to the iPhone 14’s chip. With a new iPhone SE not due until 2025, this Lightning port disappearing could take a minute.
Presently, the business continues to offer the nearly identical 6.1-inch iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models. They are identical in terms of screen resolution, cameras, Lightning connectors, and the A15 Bionic CPU.
While there are some little differences, like the 14’s satellite SOS capability, generally speaking, if you already owned an iPhone 13, you needed a compelling reason to upgrade. In practicality, you would be hard-pressed to purchase the iPhone 14 right now since the 13 costs $599, which is $100 less.
These Lightning connectors are probably here to stay, at least until the two phones make their way out of Apple’s lineup in the course of the next two years.
You may still purchase Apple’s ninth-generation iPad, despite popular belief. It sports a 10.2-inch LCD screen, a Touch ID home button, an A13 Bionic chip, and costs $329. And there’s a Lightning port, too. But what’s the deal?
For many, that’s acceptable. And I still use my iPad 7th generation. Although it is a little clumsy, it is light and functional for reading news articles or recipes. I would be surprised if this device were ever to be USB-C compatible.
